Transport, Logistics & Delivery Edition · Module 2

Custody, Handover & Proof of Delivery

Transport and delivery work often involves responsibility for property that belongs to someone else.

That property may include:

  • parcels
  • cartons
  • documents
  • equipment
  • food
  • retail goods
  • furniture
  • business supplies
  • customer returns
  • company stock

At different points, custody may move from:

WAREHOUSE

to

DRIVER / RIDER / COURIER

to

CUSTOMER / RECIPIENT

or sometimes:

CUSTOMER

back to

DRIVER / RIDER

and then

RETURN LOCATION.

Problems happen when nobody can clearly answer:

Who had the item?

How many items were there?

What condition were they in?

When did responsibility change?

Who received them?

Was the delivery completed?

Was something returned?

Was something refused?

A strong custody system protects:

  • the customer
  • the company
  • the employee
  • the goods
  • the record

BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • understand when custody responsibility begins
  • verify assigned goods before departure where appropriate
  • protect goods while they are under your responsibility
  • understand clear handover
  • use proof of delivery honestly
  • handle partial deliveries properly
  • respond appropriately to delivery refusal
  • manage returns and failed deliveries responsibly
  • report missing or damaged items accurately
  • understand why false delivery records create serious integrity problems

Core Behavior

Know what you received, protect it while it is in your custody, and document honestly how responsibility changed.

TrueConduct Principle

If responsibility changes hands, the handover should be clear.

Remember

A delivery is not complete merely because the employee reached the location.
