JUDGMENT, INITIATIVE, ESCALATION & PROBLEM SOLVING

A school cannot function well if every employee waits for the Proprietress, Headmistress or Principal before handling ordinary responsibilities.

But a school can also be harmed when employees make important decisions they are not authorized to make.

Professional judgment means knowing the difference.

Employees may regularly face situations such as:

  • a parent asks for something unusual
  • a student misses transport
  • a visitor arrives unexpectedly
  • a classroom item breaks
  • a payment record does not match
  • a staff member is absent
  • an instruction is unclear
  • a routine process fails
  • something appears unsafe

Sometimes the right response is:

HANDLE IT.

Sometimes:

CHECK FIRST.

Sometimes:

ESCALATE.

And sometimes:

ACT IMMEDIATELY FOR SAFETY, THEN REPORT.

Strong judgment combines:

  • awareness
  • responsibility
  • authority
  • common sense
  • communication
  • escalation

BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • distinguish initiative from unauthorized decision-making
  • know when to act and when to ask
  • identify routine problems you may reasonably handle
  • recognize when authority limits matter
  • escalate according to seriousness
  • avoid sending every minor problem upward
  • respond responsibly when instructions are unclear
  • consider safety and consequences before acting
  • propose solutions rather than only reporting problems
  • learn from recurring problems and improve future response

Core Behavior

Use good judgment within your role and escalate what requires greater authority.

TrueConduct Principle

Initiative means taking responsible action within appropriate boundaries.

Remember

Do not wait unnecessarily.

Do not overstep unnecessarily.
