Lesson 9.4
Protect Customers & Coworkers From Avoidable Risk
Estimated time: 6 minutes
A workplace is shared.
Your decisions may affect people who do not know that a risk exists.
Scenario
An employee notices that a customer chair is broken.
He thinks:
“Someone will fix it eventually.”
He leaves it among the other chairs.
A customer sits on it.
A more responsible response could have been:
- remove it from use if authorized and safe
- mark it clearly
- report it
- make sure the responsible person knows
Safety Information Should Not Be Hidden
If something presents a real risk, do not hide it because:
“Customers might think badly of us.”
Safety should not be sacrificed to appearance.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (FCCPC’s) business obligations include taking appropriate measures to ensure products are safe for intended or normally safe use and notifying consumers of imminent public hazards associated with products.
Remember
A professional workplace does not wait for someone to get hurt before an obvious risk matters.
