Lesson 5.9

Handovers Are Communication, Not Just Documentation

Estimated time: 6 minutes

Module 4 introduced responsibility and handover.

Here we focus on communication quality during handover.

A handover can technically happen and still be useless.

Poor Handover

“Everything is there.”

or:

“Ask Blessing.”

or:

“Nothing serious.”

Then the next employee discovers:

  • a customer is waiting for an urgent response
  • a payment needs checking
  • a delivery is delayed
  • stock is missing
  • a complaint is unresolved

Better Handover

“Three things are pending. Mrs. Bello needs an update before 4 PM. The supplier hasn’t confirmed tomorrow’s delivery. And payment for Order 147 is showing as pending, so don’t release it until accounts confirms.”

Now the next employee has actionable information.

Confirm Understanding When Stakes Are High

If the handover is important, ask:

“Is everything clear?”

or:

“Can you confirm you have the customer details?”

A handover is successful when the receiving person understands what matters next.

Remember

Information has not been handed over merely because you said some words before leaving.
