Lesson 2.3

Personal Hygiene Is Part of Workplace Readiness

Estimated time: 5 minutes

When people work close to customers or coworkers, basic hygiene becomes part of workplace consideration.

This can include:

  • regular bathing
  • clean clothing
  • oral hygiene
  • clean hands
  • managing noticeable body odor
  • keeping nails appropriate to the work
  • following workplace-specific hygiene requirements

This topic should be approached with dignity.

The goal is not to embarrass people.

The goal is to recognize that personal hygiene can affect:

  • customers
  • coworkers
  • food or product handling
  • shared environments
  • the professional image of the workplace

Strong Fragrance Can Also Be a Problem

“Clean” does not mean using large amounts of perfume or fragrance.

Strong scents may be uncomfortable for coworkers or customers.

Professional consideration includes moderation.

When Specialized Rules Apply

Some workplaces have additional requirements involving:

  • food handling
  • chemicals
  • healthcare
  • laboratories
  • children
  • manufacturing
  • protective equipment

TrueConduct’s general lesson does not replace those specialized rules.

Employees must follow the specific hygiene and safety requirements established for their role.

Remember

Personal hygiene is not about judging appearance. It is about arriving ready to work around other people.
