Supervisor Foundations · Lesson 9.10
BUILD A TEAM THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE CONSTANT SUPERVISION
The goal of supervision is not to make employees dependent on the supervisor for every small decision.
A strong team gradually develops:
- clear standards
- dependable routines
- good judgment
- communication
- ownership
- appropriate initiative
- accountability
- mutual respect
A supervisor should not have to:
- repeat every instruction forever
- solve every small problem
- chase every routine task
- personally check every action
Strong supervision creates enough clarity and capability for employees to function appropriately within their roles.
Poor
“Nobody should make any decision until I return.”
Better
“You know the routine decisions you are authorized to make. If the situation falls outside those limits, escalate it.”
WORKPLACE EXAMPLES
EXAMPLE 1
Experienced team handles routine opening procedures correctly without waiting for supervisor reminders.
EXAMPLE 2
Employee notices a customer issue, acts within authority and informs the supervisor appropriately.
EXAMPLE 3
Team members complete handovers consistently without being chased.
EXAMPLE 4
Employee recognizes a matter is outside their authority and escalates rather than improvising.
Remember
Strong supervision should build capability—not permanent dependence.
