Supervisor Foundations · Lesson 5.8
WHEN THE SAME PROBLEM CONTINUES
Sometimes the supervisor has:
- explained the standard
- provided reasonable support
- coached the employee
- clarified the expected improvement
- followed up
and the same problem continues.
At that point, repeatedly starting from zero may not be appropriate.
The issue may need stronger accountability.
Poor
POOR EXTREME 1
Ignore the repeated problem forever because:
“I don’t like confrontation.”
POOR EXTREME 2
Suddenly impose a severe consequence without considering previous communication or workplace procedure.
Better
“We have discussed this issue three times, the expectation has been clear, and the same problem is continuing. This now needs to move to the next step under our workplace process.”
WORKPLACE EXAMPLES
EXAMPLE 1
Employee continues arriving late despite repeated conversations and no identified barrier.
EXAMPLE 2
Employee keeps ignoring a required cash-handling procedure after training and coaching.
EXAMPLE 3
Employee repeatedly speaks disrespectfully to customers after clear feedback and follow-up.
EXAMPLE 4
Employee continues missing documentation requirements after demonstrating that they understand the process.
Remember
Support should create an opportunity to improve.
It should not remove accountability indefinitely.
Workplace action
Ask: Have I clearly communicated that this is now a repeated performance issue?
Quick Check
A performance problem continues after clarity, coaching, support and follow-up. What may be appropriate?
