SETTING EXPECTATIONS & DELEGATING WELL

Many workplace problems begin before the employee ever starts the task.

The instruction may have been vague. The deadline may not have been clear. Two supervisors may have given conflicting directions. The employee may not know what they are authorized to decide. Or the supervisor may believe they delegated a task when they actually only mentioned it casually.

Good delegation is more than saying:

“Please handle this.”

A supervisor should make sure the employee understands:

  • what needs to be done
  • why it matters
  • what successful completion looks like
  • when it is needed
  • what priority it has
  • what authority the employee has
  • what resources are available
  • when to ask for help
  • when to escalate

Clear expectations make accountability stronger.

They also reduce preventable frustration for both supervisor and employee.

BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • give clearer workplace instructions
  • explain expected outcomes
  • confirm understanding without being insulting
  • assign responsibility clearly
  • communicate deadlines and priorities
  • define decision-making authority
  • delegate without dumping work
  • prevent conflicting instructions
  • adjust expectations when circumstances change
  • follow up without micromanaging

Core Behavior

Give people enough clarity to succeed before judging whether they performed well.

Remember

Clear expectations do not guarantee perfect performance.

But unclear expectations create avoidable failure.
