Supervisor Foundations · Lesson 1.10

PROFESSIONAL WHEN SENIOR MANAGEMENT IS NOT WATCHING

A supervisor’s real standard often becomes visible when nobody senior is present.

When the owner leaves, does the supervisor:

  • relax every standard?
  • treat employees differently?
  • disappear from responsibility?
  • use company resources carelessly?
  • allow friends to ignore rules?
  • become abusive because nobody is watching?

Or does the supervisor continue to:

  • communicate clearly
  • support the team
  • protect customers
  • maintain standards
  • handle problems
  • act honestly
  • make appropriate decisions

Supervision requires trust.

The organization is trusting the supervisor with:

  • people
  • information
  • customers
  • assets
  • decisions
  • reputation

WORKPLACE EXAMPLES

EXAMPLE 1

The business owner leaves early.

The supervisor allows friends to close thirty minutes before the approved time.

EXAMPLE 2

Senior management is away.

A difficult customer arrives.

The supervisor handles the complaint professionally rather than saying:

“The boss is not here, so there is nothing I can do.”

EXAMPLE 3

An employee makes a mistake that senior management may never discover.

BETTER RESPONSE

The supervisor still addresses it appropriately.

EXAMPLE 4

A staff member performs excellent work during an unsupervised shift.

BETTER RESPONSE

The supervisor recognizes it rather than assuming good performance only matters when management is present.

Remember

Professionalism is what you do when nobody above you is watching.

Workplace action

Ask yourself: Would I make the same decision if the owner or senior manager were standing beside me?
