Module Opening Scenario

Chidi has worked in a busy retail store for three years.

Last month, the owner promoted him to shift supervisor.

Before the promotion, Chidi was close friends with several employees.

They ate lunch together. They joked during quiet periods. They sometimes swapped shifts informally.

One Friday evening, one of Chidi’s closest friends, Emeka, arrives forty minutes late.

The store is already busy.

Another employee says:

“Chidi, are you going to say anything? Yesterday you warned Ada for coming fifteen minutes late.”

Emeka laughs and says:

“Ah, leave that one. Chidi understands. We go way back.”

Chidi feels uncomfortable.

He does not want his friend to think the promotion has changed him.

So he says:

“Forget it. Everybody should just work.”

Ada hears the conversation.

She says nothing.

But she remembers being corrected the previous day.

Opening Question

What is the biggest supervisory problem in this situation?

Remember

A supervisor does not have to stop caring about people.

But personal relationships should not decide whose behavior is addressed and whose behavior is ignored.
