School Owner/Admin Foundations · Module 7

Developing School Leaders, Delegation & Management Accountability

As a school grows, one person cannot responsibly control every decision.

A Proprietor or Proprietress may begin with:

  • ten employees
  • one building
  • direct contact with every parent
  • personal oversight of every payment
  • personal supervision of every staff issue

Then the school grows.

There may now be:

  • a Headmistress or Headmaster
  • a Principal
  • School Administrator
  • Bursar
  • Department Heads
  • senior teachers
  • transport leadership
  • other supervisors

At this stage, the question becomes:

Who owns what?

Weak delegation creates two opposite problems.

PROBLEM 1:

Leaders have responsibility but no authority.

They are blamed for results but must ask the Proprietress before making every routine decision.

PROBLEM 2:

Leaders have authority without enough oversight.

They begin:

  • making unchecked decisions
  • protecting favorites
  • intimidating staff
  • hiding problems
  • bypassing school procedures

Strong school leadership requires both:

AUTHORITY

and

ACCOUNTABILITY.

BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • define leadership responsibilities clearly
  • match authority to responsibility
  • delegate without dumping
  • give leaders the information and tools they need
  • avoid publicly undermining delegated leaders
  • hold school leaders accountable for how they lead
  • coach and develop managers
  • prevent unchecked power and favoritism
  • identify decisions that should remain at senior-owner level
  • strengthen leadership continuity when key people are absent

Core Behavior

Develop leaders who can make appropriate decisions, lead people responsibly and remain accountable for their authority.

TrueConduct Principle

Responsibility without authority creates frustration.

Authority without accountability creates risk.

Remember

Delegation should create capable leadership—not dependency and not unchecked power.
