School Owner/Admin Foundations · Module 1
The School Leader Sets the Standard
School employees do not operate in a vacuum.
They work inside a system created and influenced by:
- Proprietors and Proprietresses
- Headmistresses and Headmasters
- Principals
- School Administrators
- department leaders
- other senior staff
Employees are responsible for their own conduct.
But leadership also shapes what employees understand about:
- acceptable behavior
- authority
- accountability
- parent service
- student treatment
- communication
- money
- records
- punctuality
- professionalism
A school may say:
“We expect professionalism.”
But employees also watch:
- what leaders model
- what leaders ignore
- how favorites are treated
- whether instructions conflict
- whether rules change depending on who is involved
- whether the Proprietress overrides the Headmistress publicly
- whether family members have undefined authority
- whether staff are corrected respectfully
- whether standards continue when senior leadership is absent
Leadership does not remove employee responsibility.
Leadership creates the environment in which responsibility becomes clearer—or more confusing.
BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- understand how leadership behavior shapes school standards
- define professional expectations clearly
- communicate standards before enforcing them
- model the behavior expected from staff
- reduce contradictory instructions
- clarify school authority and decision levels
- understand the danger of informal power
- apply standards consistently without becoming rigid
- avoid building the school around favorites
- recognize that accountability begins with clarity
