Lesson 6.2

Handling Frustration Without Spreading It

Estimated time: 6 minutes

Sometimes the person in front of you did not cause the frustration you are feeling.

You may be upset because:

  • the system is slow
  • another employee is absent
  • your manager changed the schedule
  • several customers arrived at once
  • you are dealing with a difficult personal day

Then an innocent customer asks a simple question.

You respond sharply.

Scenario

A receptionist has dealt with three difficult situations in one hour.

The fourth customer says:

“Excuse me, can you tell me where I should wait?”

The receptionist snaps:

“Can’t you see the chairs?”

The customer did nothing wrong.

The frustration was transferred.

Professional Reset

When possible:

  • pause
  • breathe normally
  • lower your voice
  • slow your response
  • ask for brief coverage if you genuinely need a moment
  • return attention to the current person rather than the previous conflict

This is not about performing emotional perfection.

It is about preventing one difficult interaction from becoming five.

Poor

“Everybody should leave me alone!”

Better

“I need two minutes to reset. Can you cover the desk briefly?”

when workplace circumstances allow.

Remember

Do not make the next person pay emotionally for what the previous person did.
