Lesson 1.10
Fairness, Consistency & Customer Trust
Estimated time: 5 minutes
Customers notice when rules appear to change depending on who is asking.
Imagine two customers requesting the same thing.
One is told:
“That is against policy.”
Then another customer says:
“I know the owner.”
Suddenly the rule changes.
Staff may think this is harmless.
Other customers may see unfairness.
Consistency Matters
Professional service should not depend on whether the customer:
- looks wealthy
- appears influential
- knows management
- is a regular customer
- speaks with a particular accent
- dresses in a particular way
- seems more important than someone else
People should be treated with basic dignity and professionalism.
This does not mean every customer receives exactly the same outcome.
Different situations may legitimately require different decisions.
But different treatment should have a reasonable business reason, not favoritism or disrespect.
Consistency Across Channels
Customers should also not receive completely different answers depending on who responds.
For example:
WhatsApp says:
“Returns are accepted within seven days.”
The store employee says:
“We never accept returns.”
Instagram says something else.
That creates confusion and distrust.
Businesses should establish clear standards so employees know what information to give.
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 10001 provides guidance for organizations on customer-facing promises and codes of conduct, reinforcing the value of clear and consistent commitments to customers.
Final Reflection
A customer may forget the exact words you used.
But they often remember whether the business felt:
- organized
- truthful
- respectful
- fair
- dependable
Remember
Trust is built through consistent small behaviors—not one impressive customer-service speech.
