EMPLOYEE PROTECTION, WORKPLACE DIGNITY & FAIR TREATMENT

Employees have responsibilities.

Employers do too.

A workplace can demand:

  • punctuality
  • honesty
  • customer service
  • accountability
  • productivity
  • professionalism

while still requiring people to be treated with dignity.

Firm management does not require:

  • public humiliation
  • insults
  • threats
  • intimidation
  • degrading language
  • retaliation
  • bullying
  • uncontrolled shouting

Owners sometimes say:

“This is my business.”

That is true.

But ownership does not make every treatment of employees good management.

Customers also matter.

But:

“The customer is always right”

does not mean employees should absorb abuse without reasonable support.

Supervisors matter.

But authority should not become permission to intimidate.

Relatives of the owner may work in the business.

But family connection should not create a second set of rules.

A strong employer protects:

CUSTOMER DIGNITY

EMPLOYEE DIGNITY

WORKPLACE STANDARDS

BUSINESS INTERESTS

at the same time.

  • reduce public humiliation in correction
  • recognize bullying, intimidation and degrading supervisory behavior

  • establish safe routes for reporting serious concerns
  • reduce retaliation after employees raise concerns
  • prevent owner relatives or favorites from becoming “untouchable”
  • handle sensitive employee concerns with reasonable privacy

  • create a workplace where respect applies upward, downward and sideways
