PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT, FAIR DISCIPLINE & EMPLOYEE ACCOUNTABILITY

Employers eventually face difficult questions:

What do I do when someone is not performing?

How many chances should I give?

What if I have already explained the standard?

What if the employee keeps making the same mistake?

What if the issue is serious?

What if the employee gives an explanation?

What if one supervisor wants discipline and another does not?

Performance management should not depend entirely on:

  • anger
  • favoritism
  • frustration
  • fear of confrontation
  • personal relationships
  • sudden punishment

A fair accountability system helps distinguish:

  • a first mistake
  • a skill gap
  • unclear instruction
  • a system problem
  • repeated poor performance
  • misconduct
  • serious misconduct requiring escalation

Support does not mean tolerating everything.

Discipline does not mean humiliating people.

A strong employer builds a process in which employees know:

  • what standard applies
  • what problem has occurred
  • what improvement is expected
  • what support is available
  • what happens if the problem continues
  • when more serious action may be required

BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • define performance expectations more clearly
  • distinguish performance problems from misconduct
  • investigate before deciding the cause
  • use coaching and corrective action appropriately
  • set specific improvement expectations
  • document important performance issues
  • hear employee explanations fairly
  • apply accountability consistently
  • distinguish ordinary problems from serious issues requiring escalation
  • prevent owners and managers from using discipline arbitrarily

Core Behavior

Address performance problems fairly, consistently and with enough clarity for employees to understand what must change.

TrueConduct Principle

Support does not remove accountability. Accountability does not require humiliation.

Remember

Discipline should solve a workplace problem.

It should not become emotional punishment.
