Employer/Owner Foundations · Module 2
HIRING, ROLES & ONBOARDING
Many workplace problems begin before poor performance appears.
They begin when:
- the wrong person is hired for an unclear role
- the business hires urgently without defining what it needs
- responsibilities are vague
- behavior expectations are never discussed
- employees receive different versions of the job
- onboarding consists only of “watch somebody and learn”
- authority is unclear
- payment, privacy or customer-service procedures are assumed
- the employee discovers important rules only after breaking them
Hiring does not guarantee perfect employees.
Good onboarding does not remove employee responsibility.
But employers can reduce avoidable confusion by giving new employees a clearer start.
A new employee should reasonably understand:
- what their role is
- what results they are responsible for
- who they report to
- what workplace behavior is expected
- what they are authorized to decide
- which procedures matter most
- how to ask questions
- what should be escalated
- how performance will be reviewed
BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- define what the business actually needs before hiring
- describe roles and responsibilities more clearly
- communicate behavior expectations during hiring and onboarding
- give candidates a realistic picture of the work
- use reasonable verification and reference processes where appropriate
- build onboarding beyond paperwork
- teach critical business systems deliberately
- structure early employee check-ins
- clarify the supervisor’s role in onboarding
- update roles when responsibilities change
Core Behavior
Give employees a clear understanding of the job, the standards and the workplace before expecting consistent performance.
TrueConduct Principle
Onboarding is where workplace expectations become visible.
Remember
Do not wait until someone fails to explain what success was supposed to look like.
