Employer/Owner Foundations · Module 1

THE OWNER SETS THE STANDARD

Every workplace has standards.

The question is whether those standards are:

  • clear or confusing
  • consistent or unpredictable
  • communicated or assumed
  • modeled or contradicted
  • supported by systems or dependent on memory

Business owners sometimes expect employees to behave professionally while leaving important workplace expectations unwritten, unexplained or inconsistently enforced.

An employee may hear:

“Use your initiative.”

But nobody has explained what they are authorized to decide.

A supervisor may be told:

“Hold people accountable.”

But there is no clear attendance standard, handover process or performance procedure.

A cashier may be expected to protect business money.

But approved payment channels are poorly controlled.

A customer-service employee may be told:

“Treat customers well.”

But nobody has defined what good service actually looks like.

Employers shape the environment in which employee behavior occurs.

This does not remove employee responsibility.

It strengthens it.

When expectations, authority, procedures and consequences are clearer, employees can be held accountable more fairly.

BY THE END OF THIS MODULE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • recognize the employer’s role in workplace behavior
  • distinguish employee problems from system problems
  • define core workplace standards deliberately
  • communicate standards before enforcing them
  • ensure owners and managers model expected behavior
  • reduce contradictory rules and instructions
  • clarify authority and decision boundaries
  • recognize when informal business habits are becoming risky
  • create consistency without unnecessary bureaucracy
  • build accountability on clear expectations

Core Behavior

Create the conditions in which professional behavior can reasonably be expected and fairly enforced.

TrueConduct Principle

You cannot hold someone accountable to a standard you never clearly established.

Remember

Training the worker matters.
